I must be one of few people who would prefer if Pokémon stayed completely lighthearted ^^;
Why not meet with the extremes and have a shoujo-esque high school romance where people kill for no reason other than to create a horrifically dreary story? Nothing says 'romance' quite like a lack of Pokemon and blood everywhere.
People seems to think mature means gore and blood.
Then there's the opposite but equally asinine approach of writing "Mature/Realistic" fics by turning Pokemon into sappy, cliche'd shoujo-esque "romantic" drivel, with the titular critters all but absent. Those fics almost make the 3edgy5u stories seem good.

Personally, I'd love it if the series became really dark. It would add more depth to what many consider a children's game.

I'm glad they weren't the same people in PokeSpe. As much as I like the Shadow Triad = Striaton Triplets theory, the manga layed it on way too thick.
