I feel like Damp is one of those abilities that needs an update, it'd be kind of useful if it blocked all bomb moves (like Bulletproof) in addition to Explosion.

I agree that Flash Fire on Gourgeist is too fitting (flavor-wise) to pass up.

Unburden is an interesting choice on Shiftry (I love Shiftry). Hawlucha has proven how good an ability it can be on the right Pokemon, being ridiculously broken in UU (and Slurpuff is pretty cool with its Belly Drum and Unburden combo).

I saw Tough Claws Drapion theorymonned on Smogon and apparently it turned it into a top tier Pokemon. Just goes to show how much crappy abilities (or should I say lack of a good ability) are holding some Pokemon back.

I remember thinking about Assault Vest Chesnaught back when the games were released, but I'd completely forgotten about it. I might have to try it out. I have my own SubRoost MoxieKrow in the PC, but I've never gotten around to using it. And I really need to EV train my Hawlucha so I can use that too...

I haven't battled on Battle Spot in forever, but I loved using Assault Vest Clawitzer on there. Might have to get back into it sometime.

Ah, that's a really good idea. I basically just bred the old fashioned way to get a parent with a 30IV in Defence and then bred with Ditto, just hoping that the Attack IV would not be selected by Destiny Knot and end up even.

I use the same strategy with my Slowpoke!

Congrats on the wins. And I'll consider some of these Pokemon when I'm looking for new Pokemon

I always wanted Lightning Rod on Samurott, negating one of its weaknesses while getting a free Sp.Atk boost seems cool. Technician would cool too tho. Blitzle is one of my favourite Pokemon (Zebstrika less so) so it's sad how bad Zebstrika is, though I think that just giving it Flare Blitz (and keeping Sap Sipper) would be enough to improve it massively. Motor Drive is easily its worst ability, so shame that they couldn't replace that one. I've seen Strong Jaw suggested for Luxray too, but Sheer Force would be even better.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with Shiftry, since it has one ok, but situational, ability, and two pretty much balls abilities. Plus it's one of my favourite Pokemon.

I hadn't really thought about the logistics of it (this was just a theorymon exercise), but now that you mention it downloadable patches are something they could do that weren't possible before. Two of the ability changes in XY were blatant nerfs, it makes me wonder if more direct intervention is possible should Game Freak be unhappy with the current game balance. The other thing is that patches might not just be limited to abilities, base stat changes are a possibility as well.

I do think that new games are the most likely time for abilities to be updated, but Game Freak certainly has the means to make mid-gen changes if they wanted to.

Well if that's the case, how would the game handle it? I can see the new 3DS games updating it, but how would XY handle it? Perhaps they'll let you download a patch that changes the hidden abilities in-game?

Not true, Quick Feet Venipede was released in Gen V via Pleasant Forest in BW2, but was still changed to Speed Boost in the transition.

but an overlooked fact is that is also marked the first time in the franchise's history that Game Freak actively retconned Pokemon abilities. Several Pokemon had their Hidden Abilites changed, opening up the possibility for Pokemon that had long since given up on getting good ability a second chance.

Nice ideas, I would particularly appreciate Filter on Avalugg, we need some more good ice types. Though, I think Lightningrod would be a more interesting and more fitting choice on Samurott. Having an electric type immunity is obviously extremely useful on a water type. Both its horn and stats are far more impressive than Seaking's.

@Norzan; What they might have been trying to do was make a Pokemon that turned into a mixed attacker after getting a kill. Off course, they failed miserably, if they were even attempting that in the first place, which I'm doubtful of considering the degree of said failure. However, the concept is still neat. Maybe its signature ability could have been a buffed version of Moxie, one that raises its attack two stages after a kill. Even with a neutral nature and no investment, it still reaches 344, or about the equivalent of a maxed out base 105 attack. This would obviously only be useful in a sweeping role, which is what Pyroar's stats and movepool are best suited for anyway.

Or alternatively it could just go all physical and play as an initially weaker version of other Moxie Pokemon. I guess that works too, though getting that kill would be significantly harder.

Instead of giving Moxie to Pyroar they should have created a special attack variant of Moxie as its hidden and signature ability.

Oh you're right! How have I not even noticed that until now, I always just assumed it was a weaker version of Volt Tackle. In that case Spark is definitely the best option if you aren't going mixed.

I like these ideas. Giving these Pokémon better Abilities just might let them see the light of day.
