Because X & Y are main series games, and the general masses will play them, as opposed to the Mystery Dungeon series, which doesn't appeal to every fan of Pokémon; at least, not to me. Pokémon Ranger (and Blue Rescue Team, I understand), a side-series I love, used the touch-screen before Diamond and Pearl, but it was still an amazing feature to have in those games.
Whatever feature it is, whether it was featured in a side-game or not, it will be exciting to have in a main series game, because those are the ones that draw all the attention, and those are the ones that people will use to judge the entire franchise of Pokémon.
The issue of walking diagonally has never been that exciting to me. I'm pretty indifferent about it.
I guess since it is the first time in the main series, it's somewhat exciting to most people.

*saves to computer*
'Round the clock,
I watch the hand strike ten;
Mellow me, spirits,
Because I've seen it again
Too many times, it's gone 'round
With all my heart just empty;
I stare the wall down,
Hoping for peace, inside of me,
But peace has not been found.
That is so cool. *saves to computer*
This is epic. Nice job :)
OMG thank goodness you're alive.
That's scary. It's good you're okay, though. 0_0
