View Full Version : Appaliachian State upends No. 5 Michigan

The first week of the College football season has some upsets, but this one is epic. Appaliachian State, winner of the past two Div 1-AA Championship, and Michigan had aspirations for a championship, boy did that turn sour. The Mountaineers, traveled into the "Big House" in Ann Arbor, and registered a big upset (if not the BIGGEST upset) in college football history. Anyone suprised that a team ranked in the Top 5 would LOSE ?

The first game usually doesn't make a good indication of an upset. The ranking is based on the performance of the team last year and obviously changes are made before the new season. So U of M might not be the fifth best team out there as they stand right now.

They're not going to in the Top 25, maybe they'll land in the Top 40, but when you lose to a Div 1-AA team, it's like you get punched in the stomach, Sure, you can get up again, but it's never the same....

This is absolutely nuts. If East Carolina had pulled it out against Virginia Tech, then today would have been the most topsy-turvy day we've had in a very long time. It's just hilarious that Michigan lost to a Division-IAA team. I'll be surprised if Lloyd Carr still has his job by Wednesday.

I would be suprised if Idaho beats USC, USC's the # 1 team in the country...

I know last year the people at CMU were joking about wanting to face MSU and Northwestern because they sucked so bad. Perhaps we should look forward to a game against Michigan if today was any indication.
It was a good game. However I still think this upset talk doesn't apply becaue it was the debute of this years teams. Appaliachian State might have a very good team this year and/or Michigan has a bad team this year. If this had happened after the teams had established themselves then yeah, this would be a huge upset.

This is still an epic upset. Two blocked field goals made it possible, too - unreal.

I'll agree, this was a major upset--that just screams for a movie, if you know what I mean.

Last year's Central/Western game was more movie worthy. There was actually something on the line and the weather was awful to boot. And today's game was won (and lost) by special team players who people don't even know the names of.
But like I said, the MAC likes what happened in the Big House today. The Big 10's overrated.

Admittedly, ASU is the best I-AA team, but a I-AA team nonetheless. Michigan's coaching just flat out failed today. There is no legitimate reason why a I-AA team should be able to nail 34 points on a team like Michigan. I know they lost some people on defense, but this was ridiculous.

Yeah, but Appalachian St. beat Michigan IN MICHIGAN ! Llyod Carr is defintly on the hot seat now, losing your last 3 bowl games, and losing to Ohio State the past 3 years, and now losing to a 1-AA team ! He's on the hot seat and he needs to win the rest of the games to save his job (which he won't)

Why is that?
Let's not forget ASU is the defending champion for the past two years in their division. That means they survived playoffs for two years to emerge triumphant.
Michigan is in the I-A division where there are no playoffs and bowl games and the championship are decided by polls.
What I'm saying is the coaches and sports writers who vote in the ESPN/USA and AP polls never think about teams in other divisions.
I'm not saying ASU can beat everyone in Division I-A, but the champion of Division I-AA can beat a lot of Division I-A teams in the first game AND lots of Division I-A teams like Duke, Harvard and Princeton.

First, the Ivy league schools are I-AA
Second, even the champion of the I-AA is miles away from a top-tier team like Michigan (was). Now I'm not knocking ASU; they were far more prepared for the game. However, I-AA teams generally don't have the talent to compete with I-A teams because of fewer scholarships, boosters, etc. Sure, good I-AA teams knock off bottom-barrell I-A teams occasionally, but Michigan? We're talking about the team that went to the Rose Bowl last year. With some decent coaching that actually motivated them for this game, they could beat ASU. Unfortunately, the players and especially the coaches thought this was a free win and paid for it both literally (they paid 400K for ASU to play) and figuratively.

My bad. Duke isn't.

Was there a big upheaval in coaches since last season? If not, perhaps there should be this season.

And how many times do we hear coaches say they can't overlook an opponent?
Didn't ASU play as well as Michigan if not dominate? Whose fault was that? The coaches? The players?

It's Lloyd Carr's fault for not getting them ready to play, and App. St. beat them, and App. St. WAS the better team. I would be surpised with Lloyd Carr would be cut, but he'll need to: beat Ohio St, and win a bowl game. If he doesn't, he'll be coaching somewhere else

Kein, would you gather you Michigan pals and protest to get rid of Lloyd Carr ? I mean, it was his fault by not getting them ready

I'm not a big fan of Lloyd Carr myself. Michigan was supposed to have a superb offense this year, yet the only player that showed up was Mike Hart. He's the reason why they didn't get blown out.

Michigan was overrated at the beginning of the year and not too suprisingly they lost to a divison 1-AA team. I am sorry to all the Michigan fans but this year is not your year

If you're about to go now you'd probably be twice as good as those jokes on the defense. Oregon could have easily tacked 20 more points late if they kept caring.

That was the best game I've ever seen. I'm excited, and I didn't even LIKE football...until now. [/Happy Student at ASU]
Yes, our win against Michigan motivated me to actually become a football fan and learn the game. In response to the poll, YES it was a huge upset.
In the town of Boone right now, ASU/Michigan t-shirts are very popular. Let me share some of them with you:
Got 400k?
Betcha know where Boone, NC is now!
Hey Michigan, would you like some more cupcakes?
Wanna hear a joke? ...Michigan.
Hey Michigan, I don't know where your mama is, but your daddy lives in Boone, NC!
Michigan WHO? 34-32.
Where's Ann Arbor?
Just thought I'd let you guys know that it's pretty much been a party all week long here at ASU. Even WE weren't expecting this, despite the tremendous school spirit we already had as back to back national champions.
(P.S: Hopefully this game will help clear up the fact that our school's name is pronounced App-a-LATCH-ian, not App-e-LAYSH-un.)

Now that's just sick. Couldn't you have used "UM" instead of "Michigan"? Because "Wanna here a joke? ...Michigan" insults our entire state.
And no, I don't know exactly where Boone is beyond it being in NC. But I do know how to prounce your schools name.

Appalachian State was too HOT HOT HOT for Michigan to handle:

Sorry. Don't shoot the messenger. *I* didn't make the t-shirts. xD But I did buy one.
@ Girafarig Magcargo: ROFL oh no...you found our shame. But I think the Michigan win more than makes up for it. xD

Well, Michigan could win against 0-2 Notre Dame. Or maybe not. How the mighty have fallen.
